In Majora's Mask, ???[1] appears in the toilet of the Stock Pot Inn at midnight asking for paper. Link can give him any item made of paper, such as any of the Title Deeds, the Letter to Kafei, or the Special Delivery to Mama.[2]. By doing so, ??? will reward him with a Piece of Heart.[3]

???'s true origin or name are unknown.[4] It is possible that perhaps this person fell in and could not get out.

In Oracle of Ages, ???[citation needed] also appears in a toilet inside a house in Lynna Village. He is also in need for paper, so Link can give him the Stationery as part of the Trading Sequence. In exchange, ??? will give him the Stink Bag.

Link can throw various items, such as the Mystical Seeds, to the toilet to cause different reactions to ???.

  • Mystery Seed: "Wh-What?!?"
  • Ember Seed: "Ooo... hot!"
  • Scent Seed: "Ewwww!"
  • Gale Seed: "My head spins!"Triforce piece.png
  • Bomb: *explodes* "Koff!"
  • Bombchu:"???" *explodes* "Koff!"
  • Pushing the Pot: "Nooooo!"

Skyward Sword

In Skyward Sword, the spectral hand of a young girl called Phoeni[5][6][7] can be found at night in the toilet of the Knight Academy, also asking for paper.

Once Link receives Cawlin's Letter, he can choose to deliver it to Karane or give it to Phoeni's hand. If he chooses the first option and visits Phoeni afterwards, she will tell Link she no longer needs the paper before vanishing.[8] If he chooses the second option, the hand will believe the letter was meant for her,[9] giving Link 5 Gratitude Crystals in exchange. Phoeni's hand will then be found stroking Cawlin while he sleeps.

Trivia

  • According to Shigeru Miyamoto, ???'s appearance and origin comes from Japanese horror stories.[10]
  • Although ??? is never given any real name, it is referred to as "手 (Te)" in the Japanese version of Oracle of Ages,[11] and Phoeni in the Skyward Sword Prima guide.[5][6][7]
  • ???'s sound clips in Majora's Mask are the same as that of Mikau's when Link first meets him at Great Bay.
  • ??? resembles Dead Hand's many hands.
  • In Skyward Sword, ??? resembles Master Hand from the Super Smash Bros. series.
  • Another hand character appears in A Link to the Past. The hand was a Thief before being cursed in the Dark World.[12]
  • ??? in Majora's Mask is a left hand. Various cultures around the world associate the left hand as dirty because right-handed people typically use the left hand to wipe themselves after using the toilet. However, ??? in Oracle of Ages and in Skyward Sword is a right hand.
