There are three lettering systems of Hylia, possibly representative of three separate languages.

The first alphabet, introduced in Ocarina of Time and used as well in Majora's Mask, is very primitive. Many sounds do not exist. The choice of letters is based on the basic Japanese alphabet.

The second alphabet, introduced in The Wind Waker and also used in The Minish Cap, Four Swords Adventures, Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks is based on the complete Japanese alphabet.

These languages, like Japanese, use one character for a vowel or consonant+vowel sound. Hylian words translate directly into Japanese words.

The third system, introduced in Twilight Princess, is Latin-based and the words translate directly into English.

Majora's Mask

Most of the text in Majora's Mask appears to be nonsensical random symbols, with many of the shop signs being mirror images of the symbols. Those that are not mirror-imaged are either random sequences of symbols that do not translate into anything, or graphic elements; e.g. the square signs and the Romani Ranch sign, being borrowed directly from Ocarina of Time without any change.

In addition to they, the people of the plains, the mountain people, the Gorons, the water people, the Zoras, the desert people, the Gerudo, and the forest people, the Kokiri, were each living their own lives. Even in this rich land, destruction's footsteps were steadily creeping in.

It was then that wickedness encircled the land due to the hand of the evil one who had obtained the power of the gods, and this once beautiful land was falling into ruin.

A person clad in green appeared from an unknown location and, gifted with divine power, brought the evil power to a just end, returning peace to his land.
時の勇者	Toki no Yūsha	The Hero of Time
時を子へ現れしこの者は時の勇者と呼ばれ王国においての伝説となりて伝わる。それからしばらくの後平穏の戻ったかに思われた王国に再び暗雲が立ち込めた。	Toki wo ko he Arawareshi Kono Mono wa Toki no Yūsha to Yobare Ōkoku ni Oite no Densetsu to Narite Tsutawaru. Sorekara Shibaraku no Nochi Heion no Modotta ka ni Omoeareta Ōkoku ni Futatabi Anun ga Tachikometa.	Because time manifested itself to him, this person is called the "Hero of Time", and has been passed down as a legend in the kingdom. A short while later, dark clouds once again shrouded the kingdom to which it had seemed peace had returned.
勇者のまたをき^[sic]により永遠に封じられたと思われていた悪しき力を持つ者がなにゆえか再び復活を遂げた。	Yūsha no Matawoki^[sic] ni Yori Eien ni Fūjirareta to Omowareteita Ashiki Chikara wo Motsu Mono ga Naniyueka Futatabi Fukkatsu wo Togeta.	The one wielding the evil power, who had thought to be sealed away forever due to the hero's efforts^[sic], had somehow achieved revival once again.
民共は伝説の勇者が再び現れることを待ち望んだが時の流れを旅して国を後にした勇者はついに現れなかった。守る者のいない王国で邪悪が王宮にまで迫った時民共は祈りを捧げ彼の地の運命を神の手に委ねることとした。	Tamidomo wa Densetsu no Yūsha ga Futatabi Arawareru Koto wo Machinozonda ga Toki no Nagare wo Tabishite Kuni wo Ato ni Shita Yūsha wa Tsuini Arawarenakatta. Mamoru Mono no Inai Ōkoku de Jāku ga Ōkyū ni Made Sematta Toki Tamidomo wa Inori wo Sasage Kanochi no Unmei wo Kami no Teni Yudanaru Koto to Shita.	The people waited anxiously for the hero of legend to reappear, but in the end the hero who had travelled the flow of time and left the country behind did not appear. In the protectorless kingdom, when the evil drew near to the royal palace, the people offered up their prayers and entrusted the fate of that land to the hands of the gods.
長い時を経て今この物語を伝え聞く者達は伝説勇者に準えて男の子が成長した時その祝いとして緑の衣を作りて着せるようになったという。	Nagai Toki wo Hete Ima Kono Monogatari wo Tsutaekiku Monotachi wa Densetsu Yūsha ni Nazoraete Otoko no ko ga Seichou Shita Toki Sono Iwai to Shite Midori no Koromo wo Tsukurite Kiseru You ni Natta to Iu.	A long time passed and now people who learn this story imitate the legendary hero. It's said that it's come to to be that at the time that boys grow to adulthood, they make and wear green clothes in celebration.
「緑の衣纏いし者光は放つ剣を持ちて邪鬼を消し去る」伝説の勇者にも負けない立派な人に育ってほしいと願いを託して。	"Midori no Koromo Matoishi Mono Kikari wa Natsu Ken wo Machite Jaki wo Keshisaru" Densetsu no Yūsha ni Mo Makenai Rippa na Hito ni Sodatte Hoshii to Negai wo Takushite.	They entrust a wish to grow into fine people who could hold their own against even the hero of legend, garbed in green, who took up the sword of light to vanquish the evil ones.
