Metroid Prime was the first 3D installment of the Metroid series. It was also the first Metroid game to be released on the Nintendo GameCube. It switched the series from a side-scrolling view to a first person view to create a shooter-type game. Although some fans of the series were not happy with the new gameplay, the game was a new beginning for the Metroid series and is compared with Super Mario 64 for being a spectacularly smooth transition from into the third dimension. Sequels are Metroid Prime 2: Echoes and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption for the Wii. The main character, Samus Aran, appears in the Super Smash Bros. games.

Metroid Prime 2: Echoes has been compared to A Link to the Past for using a similar Light World/ Dark World format.

Ocarina of Time Master Quest GCN disc featured a trailer for 'Metroid Prime' among others.
