Rem is a resident of Hyrule Town, and owns Rem's Shoe Store. He has a habit of falling asleep while working on shoes, only to find them to be completed when he wakes up. This leads him to believe that he is skilled in crafting shoes while asleep.[3] However, his shoes are really completed by the Minish who live in Rem's Shoe Store, and can be seen working while he sleeps.
When Link is unable to cross the Castor Wilds, he must seek Rem's help to create the Pegasus Boots;[4] however, Rem has fallen into a deep sleep and the Minish have taken to crafting the Pegasus Boots themselves. Despite this, Rem is needed to add the finishing touches to the Boots,[5] so Link must retrieve a Wake-Up Mushroom from Syrup in her Hut in the northernmost section of Minish Woods.[6][7][8] To wake Rem, Link must face him and press the R-button,[9][10] causing him to inhale the Wake-Up Mushroom's stench.[11]
After Link awakens Rem with the Wake-Up Mushroom, Rem finishes the Pegasus Boots and gives them to Link free of charge.[12] Afterwards, Rem resolves to return to working on crafting Princess Zelda's shoes that were commissioned by King Daltus,[13][14] only to fall asleep again.[15]
Rem is the author of a Book titled Rem's Anthology for Sleepless Nights.[16]

Rem's name derives from "R.E.M.", also known as rapid eye movement, a stage of deep sleep.
