The Stick is the fifth item in the Trading Sequence in Link's Awakening. Once Link has obtained the bananas from Sale's Banana Shop, as part of the trading sequence, he will eventually meet a monkey near the moat of Kanalet Castle. Link has to give the bunch of bananas to the monkey in order to enter the castle for the first time, as the monkey will call his friends and build a bridge. They will also leave behind a stick, which is also an item of the trading sequence. The stick will later be needed for Link to obtain the Honeycomb.
Because the beginning sequences of Link's Awakening's trading sequence is required to be done in order to progress further in the game later on, it is required that Link receives the stick and trades it, as doing so is the only way to enter Kanalet Castle for the first time. Afterwards, Link will need to continue to trade in order to progress further in the game.
