In The Adventure of Link, the Up Thrust is a skill taught to Link by a Hyrulean Knight in Darunia Town. Since the door to the Knight's house is locked from the inside, the young hero must use the Jump Spell to jump from roof to roof and eventually enter the house by going down its chimney. At the end of the basement, the knight teaches Link his new skill upon talking to him.[1]

When Link uses this skill, he leaps into the air and thrusts his sword straight up, attacking enemies directly above him. This is especially useful against flying enemies such as Aches, and also for clearing out blocks in Palaces after getting the Glove.

Despite its frequent usability in The Adventure of Link, the Up Thrust technique has not been included in any other Zelda game since; however, this technique appears in Soulcalibur II and the Super Smash Bros. series, most likely in reference to its original appearance.

Super Smash Bros. Series

In the Super Smash Bros. series, Link, Young Link, and Toon Link can only perform this attack while they are in the air: by pressing up in the Control Stick and then the Smash button. This attack deals a maximum of 16% worth of damage.

In Soulcalibur II, the Up Thrust is one of Link's moves, although it goes by the name of Rocket Stab. It is considered to be a mid-attack and can be performed by pressing up in the Control Pad, and then the vertical attack button. Using this attack will allow Link to deal up to 28 HP worth of damage.
