A whirlwind[1][2] is an object appearing in The Wind Waker and The Minish Cap. It is a vortex of wind that is mainly used to increase Link's altitude and reach otherwise inaccessible places. To ride the whirlwind, the young hero must approach it while having an item that will allow him to boost himself up with the aid of the wind.

Appearances and Function

Majora's Mask

In Majora's Mask, whirlwinds can be initially found in the northernmost corridor of the Stone Tower Temple. Deku Link, thanks to his ability to fly, can use these propellers to elevate higher, allowing him to avoid the floor of lava underneath. When the tower is reversed, the sources of light at the top of the watery chamber become wind propellers as well. It should be noted that, with whirlwinds, Deku Link can start flying without the need of a Deku Flower.

The Wind Waker

In The Wind Waker, Link must use the Deku Leaf while floating to ride the whirlwind. They are mostly found in the Wind Temple, which the young hero utilizes to navigate through the dungeon. The whirlwinds are also used to win the Bird-Man Contest in the Flight Control Platform since Link must traverse a specific sea distance and cross a pre-determined finish line, set out in the open ocean, using whirlwinds to help him keep his altitude.

Although whirlwinds are mostly used as a boost while gliding, they can also be found as obstacles that impede Link from advancing, such as in the Wind Temple where there are various whirlwinds blowing down into the floor that the young hero must inactivate to keep going. Moreover, running into a cyclone out in the Great Sea will cause the King of Red Lions to change his direction.

The Minish Cap

Whirlwinds are small tornadoes found throughout Hyrule in The Minish Cap. Link can jump into one of these with the Roc's Cape, or off a ledge. When he jumps into one, Link will hold onto Ezlo like a parachute, and will be able to glide for a short time.
