Windfall Island is a market town in the Great Sea region of The Wind Waker, and is known for having the highest population of all the islands in the game. People from all over the world come to Windfall Island, and as such, the town is always lively.[1] Many sailors have found their way here, although their ships are never around.

Overview

There are multiple places of interest on the island, including a Potion Shop, Bomb Shop, a lighthouse and windmill, school, a cafe bar, auction house, and a prison. The huge gate at the entrance of town is known to be one of Windfall's most famous features.[2]

Link first encounters Windfall Island after being cast out of the Forsaken Fortress and rescued by the King of Red Lions. It soon becomes apparent that the entity at the fortress has taken its toll on the island in its search for young, pointy-eared girls.

The King of Red Lions immediately makes it clear that he neads a sail in order to travel the seas.[3] Link first encounters the strange Zunari, who offers him a sail for 80 Rupees.[4] The Zunari-induced Island Trading Sequence in the game is central to this point, where Zunari eventually "retails" his flowers.

Here, Link gets to meet many interesting characters and get involved in numerous sidequests, such as that of Mrs. Marie's Joy Pendant obsession and the Picto Box quest. There are many things to do and see here, so Link visits Windfall Island quite often, both for plot-related events and to simply help out the citizens of the town.

Bomb Shop

Main article: Bomb Shop

Owned by Bomb-Master Cannon, the last bomb-maker left in the entire sea,[5], the Bomb Shop in Windfall Island is separated from the rest of the shops of Windfall. At first, the bombs here are too expensive for Link to even be able to afford. It's only after Tetra and her crew of pirates tie Bomb-Master Cannon up and steal his bombs that he lowers the price.

Prison

There is a prison cell located near the middle of the town, and it is here where Tingle got imprisoned for stealing one of Lenzo's Picto Boxes.[6] Once Link goes inside, he can press a switch hidden behind several jars to free Tingle, who will thank him by giving him the Tingle Tuner. Moreover, he hands over Link a map to show him how to get to his island, and tells him that if he ever needs help with reading charts to just leave it to Tingle.[7][8]

Once Tingle is freed, Link can push the box that's aligned the wall out of the way to discover a hole. Inside the hole is a complex maze that Link must crawl through, and if Link follows the right path, he will eventually find the hidden place where Tingle kept the Picto Box. The young hero can acclaim it by simply opening the treasure chest it's kept in.

Chu Jelly Juice Shop

The Chu Jelly Juice Shop is a shop that specializes on using Chu Jelly to make potions.[9] It is run by the eccentric Doc Bandam, who at first only sells Red Potion. When Link gives him 15 Green and Blue Chu Jelly, Doc Bandam will be able to make Green and Blue Potion, respectively.[10] Every time Link gives him more Chu Jelly, the potion-maker will give the young hero a free sample of the new potion, either a red, green, or blue potion, depending on what type of jelly Link gives him. Even if he has already made that type of potion, he will still give Link a free sample. The Chu Jelly Juice Shop is located next to the mansion on Windfall Island.

Zunari's Shop

At first, Zunari's Shop has nothing but a sail to sell. Once Link buys the sail from him for 80 Rupees, Zunari's business begins to grow with the help of both of the Goron Merchants and Link. The merchants begin to deliver their products to Zunari's Shop, and as Link continues to trade with the Gorons, more items to sell begin to arrive at the hands of Zunari. Eventually his shop turns out to be a huge success, with a variety of items to sell that could help decorate the town. After Mila is rescued from the Forsaken Fortress, she can be seen working at Zunari's Shop.

The Cafe Bar

The Cafe Bar[11] is located right next to Zunari's Shop, and it's one of the most popular hang-out places around Windfall Island. It was previously run by Gillian's father, but he has fallen ill and his daughter is now the one that manages it, although she doesn't seem to enjoy the job.[12][13] Many citizens of Windfall enjoy going to the bar for either dates or even just to sit around and relax after a hard day at work.[14][15] At night, the cafe bar gets filled with sailors such as Dampa, Candy, Loot, and Gummy, but during the day it is a much calmer place.[16] Gossack can always be found hanging around here, and at some point, various other characters that Link meets during his journey wind up coming to the bar for one reason or another.

Lighthouse

Prior to the events of The Wind Waker, Windfall's lighthouse went dark for unknown reasons, and it has remained that way ever since.[17] Below it is a type of ferris-wheel that allows anyone to climb up to the lighthouse to get a better view. Before the lighthouse malfunctioned, it would send a bright shaft of light into the darkness to serve as a safety beacon.[18] The illumination device still works, however, and it continues to spin around despite that its fire has extinguished.[19] Link can spark up the lighthouse by getting on top of the ferris wheel and shooting a Fire Arrow inside into the device, allowing it shine its grand ray of light. Kreeb will reward Link with Piece of Heart for fixing the lighthouse.

Mrs. Marie's School of Joy

Mrs. Marie is the town's teacher and has her own school near the lighthouse called the School of Joy.[20] When Link talks to her, she explains of the problem she's had lately with a group of students known as the Killer Bees: they never listen to a word she says and they're always skipping school.[21] Link can help Mrs. Marie with the little troublemakers to earn several items that will become useful later on in his quest.

Other places of interest include Lenzo's house, where Link gets to know the famous photographer Lenzo as well as his vast gallery of pictographs. There is also an enormous mansion that is home to Mila and her father, but later on Maggie and her father take ownership of it. The mansion also serves as the Auction House where the nightly auction takes place. Link can also play the Sinking Ships minigame in front of Mrs. Marie's school to win two Pieces of Heart.

Theory Warning: Be advised that the following article or section contains unconfirmed, fan-made theories or speculation.

It can be assumed that Windfall Island used to be Kakariko Village before the Great Flood. This is due to the similarities in the background music to the Kakariko Village in Ocarina of Time. It is also relatively close to Dragon Roost Island, which resembles Death Mountain. Also, the windmill could be the same windmill in Kakariko Village.

Trivia

  • In the Japanese version of The Wind Waker, Windfall Island is called "Taura Island".
  • Windfall Island's theme tune is a remix of the music from Kakariko Village in Ocarina of Time.
  • Windfall Island also holds the record for the most Pieces of Heart on a single island in The Wind Waker: Nine in total.
  • The sunken treasure of this island is marked by a Treasure Chart found inside the island itself (this chart is won through the auction run by Zunari.
