The Cane of Somaria is a reoccurring item in the Zelda series, and first debuted in A Link to the Past. This red cane, when used, instantly creates a single block that Link can push and sometimes can be carried around. Only a single block can be created at a time.

A Link to the Past
In A Link to the Past, the Cane of Somaria is the treasure item of Misery Mire. In this title, magic is needed to create blocks and its blocks can be detonated or picked up and thrown. The Cane of Somaria is mostly used in the Turtle Rock dungeon.
Oracle of Ages
In Oracle of Ages, the Cane of Somaria plays a very similar role, although without the use of magic power as in its A Link to the Past counterpart. It is the primary treasure of Level 5, Crown Dungeon. Unlike A Link to the Past, the block created can not be detonated.
Four Swords Adventures
In Four Swords Adventures, the Level 2 Fire Rod works very similarly to the Cane of Somaria. When thrown into a fairy fountain, a regular Fire Rod, along with many items in this game, would be leveled up. It can then be swung to create red blocks. By swinging the rod again the first block would disapear and send fireballs flying in four directions.
Trivia
In its first appearance, the Cane of Somaria required magic to work, but in its second it did not, most likely because a Magic Meter does not exist in the Oracle Series.
