Manga (Hiragana: まんが; katakana: マンガ) is the Japanese word for "comic". Outside of Japan, the term refers to comics made in Japan. There have been several mangas for The Legend of Zelda series, mostly following the plot lines of various games, with some slight differences. Some of these would include that Link speaks, new characters are added, and different places are visited. It should be noted that these stories are not considered canon by many fans for those reasons, however, in interview from 2004 Eiji Aonuma supported Akira's mangas since her stories fill gaps that weren't explained well in the game.[citation needed] Interestingly, Akira's mangas influenced Eiji into creating the Rito race.[citation needed]

Many of these mangas are available only in Japan, however, Viz Media released Akira Himekawa's complete manga collection in English within the United States and Canada. The manga collection was also released as a box set on October 25, 2011. Due to the fact that Viz Media published these mangas within their Viz Kids divison, certain scenes were removed as a form of censorship within their translations. Himekawa's latest manga based on Skyward Sword was released as part of Hyrule Historia.
