The Yoshi Doll is the first item of the Trading Sequence of Link's Awakening. The doll is based on the famous Nintendo character, Yoshi the dinosaur. The doll is a prize that can be won at Mabe Village's Trendy Game shop, which can be played for 10 Rupees. Unlike most items in the game, the Yoshi Doll is the only item that is not on a conveyor belt, and thus can easily be snagged with the crane. Upon recieving it, Link has to give it to the mother of the quadruplet's living in Mabe Village for her baby to play with. The mother will then give Link a Ribbon, thus beginning the Link's Awakening trading sequence.
Because the beginning sequences of Link's Awakening's trading sequence is required to be done in order to progress further in the game later on, it is required that Link wins the Yoshi Doll and trades it.
Trivia
When Link receives the doll, the text box will say that "this doll" has appeared in many games recently, referring to the Nintendo character, Yoshi, gaining a lot of popularity and thus appearing in several games.
