Lava is a recurring Object in The Legend of Zelda series.[1][2][3][4][name reference needed]

Location and uses[]

Lava is molten rock usually appearing in the form of thick, fiery liquid that ranges from red to orange to yellow. In most The Legend of Zelda games, touching Lava causes Link to lose health if he falls in, and in a few 3D installments of The Legend of Zelda series, touching Lava forces him to restart the current room he is in.

Mainline appearances[]

The Legend of Zelda[]

Lava appears in some dungeons in The Legend of Zelda, being represented by red tiles. Like Water, Lava cannot be walked on, making it harmless, although the Stepladder can be used to walk over Water and Lava.

The Adventure of Link[]

Lava appears in some caves and palaces in The Adventure of Link. Falling into lava will automatically cause Link to lose a life, regardless of his current health.

A Link to the Past[]

Lava appears only as part of the scenery in a room of Turtle Rock in A Link to the Past.

Link's Awakening[]

Lava appears only in Turtle Rock, where the mini-boss, Hydrosoar, and the boss, Hot Head, are each inside their own room with a large pool of Lava. Similarly to A Link to the Past, Link cannot walk into the Lava, although it hinders his ability to freely move around.

Ocarina of Time[]

OoT Lava 2

Lava in Ocarina of Time

Ocarina of Time is the first game where Link can walk on Lava, although this constantly damages him in the process. Link can take significantly less damage from Lava if he is wearing the Goron Tunic.

Lava appears throughout a few fire-themed and volcanic areas. It first appears in Dodongo's Cavern, followed by Death Mountain Crater, the Fire Temple, and a certain room within Ganon's Castle. There is Lava in the Boss Rooms of King Dodongo and Volvagia respectively, and when the boss is defeated, the Lava cools and hardens.

Majora's Mask[]

In Majora's Mask, Lava appears in Snowhead Temple and Stone Tower Temple, and function similarly as in Ocarina of Time. Whether Link can walk across Lava and whether he takes damage from doing so depends on his current form. In his regular form, Link can walk on lava, but this inflicts constant damage on him in the process. Deku Link and Zora Link will restart a room if they fall into lava, whereas Goron Link is completely immune to lava.

Oracle of Seasons[]

In Oracle of Seasons, Subrosia has a large abundance of Lava, and the location's inhabitants, the Subrosians, are unaffected by the Lava. The Sword & Shield Maze, located in Subrosia, also has a lot of Lava. If Link falls into Lava, he takes damage.

There is a Lava-based item named Lava Soup, which the Subrosian Chef gives to Link at one point.

Oracle of Ages[]

In Oracle of Ages, a large abundance of Lava appears in Symmetry City, as well as in the Skull Dungeon.

A different Lava-based item appears, Lava Juice, which can be obtained through the Goron Shooting Gallery mini-game.

Four Swords[]

In Four Swords, there is Lava in Death Mountain, and if one of the Links touches it, he loses health and respawns outside of it.

The Wind Waker[]

In The Wind Waker, Lava appears in a few dungeons, including Dragon Roost Cavern, Fire Mountain, and in Ganon's Tower.

In most areas, if Link falls into lava, he bounces upward from burn damage and respawns at the start of the room. An exception to this is during the boss fight again Gohma, where Link instead bounces out of the lava upon taking damage. Link can create temporary platforms in the Lava by throwing Water Pots or shooting Ice Arrows into it, and he sometimes has to do so in order to progress.

Four Swords Adventures[]

Lava appears in the Tower of Flames in Four Swords Adventures.

The Minish Cap[]

Lava appears in the Cave of Flames in The Minish Cap. It will damage Link if he falls into it. Link can traverse Lava using Updraft as well as unstable rocky platforms that must occasionally be flipped over with the Cane of Pacci. Lava is featured prominently in the boss fight against Gleerok.

Twilight Princess[]

Lava appears in the Goron Mines in Twilight Princess. If Link falls into Lava, he will lose two hearts simultaneously before returning to the start of the room. However, if Link is wearing the Zora Armor, this damage is multiplied by 10, making Lava an instant-death hazard for Link.

Phantom Hourglass[]

Lava appears in the Temple of Fire in Phantom Hourglass. If Link falls into Lava, he suffers damage and respawns outside of it, similarly to Four Swords.

Spirit Tracks[]

Lava appears in the Fire Temple and on several floors of the Tower of Spirits. Lava has the same damaging effects on Link as before.

Skyward Sword[]

Lava appears in the Eldin Volcano in Skyward Sword. If Link touches the lava, he catches on fire and respawns outside of the Lava. However, Link can create temporary platforms on the Lava by throwing Water Fruits on it, similarly to the Water Pots in The Wind Waker. If Link makes contact with Lava while having the Wooden Shield equipped, it burns up.

A Link Between Worlds[]

Lava appears in Turtle Rock and Lorule Castle in A Link Between Worlds. Similarly to many other two-dimensional games in The Legend of Zelda series, if Link falls into a pool of lava, he takes damage and respawns outside of the Lava. Link can now freeze Lava using the Ice Rod, including on Lava Geysers in certain areas.

Tri Force Heroes[]

Like in previous game, if Link falls into Lava, he takes damage and respawns outside of the Lava. There are two ways for him to safely traverse lava: by riding a Totem Armos or by wearing the Goron Garb, which allows him to swim in Lava harmlessly.

Breath of the Wild[]

Lava is an obstacle in the Eldin region of Hyrule. Just as before, touching Lava inflicts damage upon Link, and most enemies are defeated merely from touching Lava.
